How Does an LG Mini Split Heat Pump Work?

Heating and cooling technology has come a long way since its inception several decades ago. Today’s efficient systems don’t use ducts to transport air and can even serve as both a heater and an air conditioner. These are called ductless heat pumps or mini split systems.

LG is a top manufacturer of these advanced solutions and provides reliable comfort you can count on. Here’s how LG mini split heat pumps work and how Cape Cod Heat Pumps can help you keep your home or business comfortable all year long.

Components of an LG Mini Split Heat Pump

There are three main components of an LG mini split system:

  1. The outdoor condenser. This sits outside on a concrete or brick pad and is connected to the other parts of the heat pump.
  2. The indoor air handler. This is mounted inside your home or office, usually on the wall, and is where your warm or cool air comes from when the system is turned on.
  3. The line set. Thin tubes called refrigerant lines are used to connect the outdoor condenser and the indoor air handler.

How Mini Splits Work to Heat and Cool Your Space

When you turn your ductless mini split on, several things happen:

  • The thermostat senses the temperature in your space and compares it to your preferred setting. If the ambient temperature is too high, your mini split will start running.
  • Heat is extracted from your space using the refrigerant inside of the indoor air handler. Then, that heat is moved outside as the refrigerant circulates between the interior unit and the outdoor condenser.
  • The fan in the air handler helps push cooled air throughout the room.

In the winter, the process is simply reversed. Warmth still present outside is extracted from the environment and carried to the indoor air handler via the system’s refrigerant lines. Then, the blower pushes warm air through the room instead.

A Look At INVERTER Technology

LG’s Inverter technology helps save energy by more accurately controlling the blower’s fan speed. Instead of operating at high, medium, and low settings like other air conditioners, an Inverter system can run the fan on 70 different speed settings between 30 and 100. This offers several benefits, including faster heating and cooling, lower energy bills, and a longer system lifespan.

Understanding Single and Multi-Zone Systems

There are two general categories that a ductless system can fall into – single and multi-zone. A single zone system contains one indoor air handler and one outdoor condenser and is designed to heat or cool a single area like a bedroom or living room.

Multi zone systems can heat and cool several spaces independently of one another and are a great option when you need HVAC in more than one area. Most often, these systems have up to 8 indoor units connected to one outdoor unit depending on how many zones are needed.

However, two condenser units are necessary if you need to run heating and cooling at the same time. For example, if you are a business owner that needs a cold room for high-tech gadgets or product storage, you will need one system dedicated to the climate controlled room and a separate system that can be used to heat or cool the rest of your establishment.

How to Operate Your LG Ductless System

LG mini splits come with a convenient and easy-to-use remote control that allows users to adjust the temperature in their homes with the touch of a button. You can choose from multiple modes to control your indoor comfort, including heating mode, cooling mode, automatic mode, dry mode, and fan only mode. You can also adjust the vertical and horizontal louvers on the indoor unit to direct the airflow where you would like it to go.

You can also download the LG THINK app from the Apple Store or Google Play to operate your system from your mobile device no matter where you are. This allows you to turn your heat up or down when you’re away from home or work, so your space is always ready for you and never costs you money or uses energy when you don’t need it.
